How Cannatrek is deploying innovation in Australia’s evolving cannabis market

How Cannatrek is deploying innovation in Australia’s evolving cannabis market

The Australian cannabis market is still heavily reliant on imports. Demand is frequently exceeding the supply capabilities of cannabis companies operating in Australia, while the number of patients is continuing to increase rapidly.

Given the state of the market, we are developing infrastructure to support a variety of cultivation methods to meet the accelerating demands of the Australian cannabis market.

While we already have a fully operational cultivation site in Queensland, we’re expanding our facilities in Shepparton, Victoria to grow outdoors in polytunnels, glasshouses and in an indoor cultivation facility that will include a GMP-compliant post-harvest processing facility. We’ve finished building a manufacturing and distribution facility where we hope to soon have full GMP accreditation to pack whole flower.

We’re focused on producing high-quality, safe, and aesthetically pleasing medicinal cannabis products that patients want and need.

Victoria’s major parties back overhaul of drug-driving laws for medicinal cannabis users

Victoria’s major parties back overhaul of drug-driving laws for medicinal cannabis users

Victoria’s drug-driving laws are set to be overhauled for medicinal cannabis users, with both major parties backing a push by Legalise Cannabis over the rules.

The bill seeks to change the state’s road safety laws to treat medicinal cannabis like other prescription medications for drivers. It’s an offence for a person to drive with any trace of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of cannabis, in their system, even if they have a prescription from their doctor. This is despite the fact THC can be present in a driver’s system for long periods of time, even after the initial effects have worn off.

Motorists taking other prescribed drugs including antidepressants, opiates and antihistamines may be impaired, but these drugs are not tested for driving by police. Debates on the Road Safety Amendment (Medicinal Cannabis) bill have called for a change to this ‘unfair’ and ‘inconsistent’ system for 65,000 Victorians currently prescribed medicinal cannabis.

It’s an issue the government has been grappling with for several years, prompting the establishment of the medicinal cannabis and safe driving working group, which commissioned three universities to conduct additional research in 2021.

Introducing Greenship by Cannatrek

Introducing Greenship by Cannatrek

The pharmaceutical supply chain is broken. People looking to get a prescription often find themselves having to visit or call multiple pharmacies to find one that has the medicine they need. Sometimes, they can’t find it at all. So, we developed a solution: Greenship, an advanced digital supply chain solution to get patients their plant-based medicines, when and where they need them.

Greenship is an all-in-one B2B platform that enables dispensaries to easily order, track and receive medicinal cannabis products faster than ever before. Pharmacists and dispensing doctors can browse, buy, and receive patient medicine stock.

Like many medicines, medicinal cannabis often needs to be taken daily to be optimally effective. We’re harnessing the power of advanced supply chain technologies that utilise the Internet of Things, advanced robotics, and big data analysis to optimise supply chain logistics, management and performance. These digital technologies enable Greenship to offer free, fast shipping, real-time order tracking and on-demand delivery so dispensaries can get medicines to patients when they need them.

Greenship offers same day delivery to pharmacies in metro areas, and express shipping to any pharmacy, anywhere in Australia outside of metro areas. We have multiple warehouses in every capital city in Australia. Greenship distributes medicinal cannabis made by Cannatrek, and it also carries other quality brands. It’s not competitive, but collaborative. Because we think that’s how good business is done.

Legal medicinal cannabis use on the rise

Legal medicinal cannabis use on the rise

New research from the University of Sydney’s Lambert Initiative shows a significant uptake in legal medicinal cannabis use, with 37 per cent of Cannabis as Medicine survey respondents reporting prescription use – up from 2.5 per cent in the survey taken two years before.

Results from the third Cannabis as Medicine study

People using prescribed products were more likely to use oral products or vaporised cannabis rather than smoking, highlighting a health benefit of this transition from illicit to legal use.  Overall, 95 per cent of respondents reported improvements to their health with cannabis use.

Chronic pain is the main reason prescribed patients use medicinal cannabis, consistent with other prescription data from the Therapeutics Goods Administration, while people using illicit products reported treating mental health or sleep conditions.

Only 24 per cent of prescribed patients agreed that accessing medicinal cannabis was straightforward. Cost is the biggest barrier to medicinal cannabis access for most respondents, with an average cost of $79 per week. People using illicit cannabis also reported an inability to find medical practitioners willing to prescribe, consistent with findings from a recent 2020 Senate Inquiry into the barriers to patient access in Australia.

More work is required to enhance communication between patients and doctors to make sure patients have access to regulated, quality-controlled cannabis products and can be informed of the exact THC and CBD composition, which is an ongoing problem with illicit cannabis.
